Using Celluloid Crown Forms Correctly

• How Celluloid Forms Work — The transparent form holds composite against the prepared tooth while it polymerises. Light passes through the celluloid, curing the composite from the labial surface for uniform polymerisation.
• Selecting the Right Size — Match the crown form to the natural tooth width and incisal length before committing. Trial sizing against the adjacent tooth before loading composite prevents misfits and waste of material.
• Venting Air Inclusions — Pierce a small vent hole at the incisal edge to allow excess composite and air to escape. This prevents air entrapment, which creates internal voids and weakens the finished buildup.
• Incisor vs Canine Forms — Forms are size-coded separately for central incisors, lateral incisors and canines. Using an incisor form on a canine produces a flat labial profile -- always verify tooth type.
• Removal Technique — Peel the form off from the gingival margin after light-curing to avoid chipping the composite. A sharp probe tip can initiate peeling; avoid levering against the incisal edge, which may fracture.
• Finishing After Form Removal — Finish with interproximal strips and polishing discs to refine the margins and surface. Celluloid forms leave a smooth labial surface but proximal and gingival margins still need finishing.

1. Select and trial-fit the form against the prepared tooth to confirm size.
2. Pierce a small vent hole at the incisal tip of the form.
3. Load composite into the form and seat it over the prepared tooth.
4. Light-cure through the transparent form from the labial surface.
5. Peel off the form from the gingival margin and finish margins with strips and discs.
