Metal Post

(0 products)

Metal posts are threaded or smooth titanium and gold-plated root canal posts indicated for severely broken-down teeth requiring high retention, providing mechanical retention through active threading into root dentine or passive cementation in wider post spaces.

MedSTA supplies metal posts in EGP with nationwide delivery across Egypt. Explore our complete Posts and Drills range, or shop all dental supplies available for fast delivery from MedSTA.

How to Choose the Right Metal Post for Severely Broken-Down Teeth

  • Active vs Passive Metal Posts — Active threaded screw posts (titanium or stainless steel) mechanically engage root dentine by cutting threads, providing very high retention but carrying a risk of dentinal cracking from internal wedging stress. Passive metal posts (smooth or serrated parallel posts) rely on cement retention alone — lower retention than active posts but lower root fracture risk, making them suitable for narrower roots.
  • Material Grade — Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V alloy) posts offer superior corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and elastic modulus (110 GPa) compared to 316L stainless steel (200 GPa). Gold-plated posts provide aesthetic improvement in translucent ceramic restorations but offer no mechanical advantage over uncoated titanium.
  • Root Fracture Risk — Active threaded metal posts carry the highest root fracture risk of any post design due to the wedging forces generated during thread engagement; this is particularly significant in Egyptian dental practice where endodontically treated posterior teeth are often heavily loaded by parafunction. Reserve active screw posts for anterior teeth with adequate dentinal wall thickness (>1.5 mm).
  • ISO Size Selection — Metal screw posts are available in sizes S/M/L (small, medium, large) or in diameter steps from 0.8–1.8 mm. Diameter must not exceed one-third of the root width at the narrowest level. Select the smallest diameter that provides clinically acceptable retention after cementation.
  • Cementation — Resin cement (dual-cure with MDP) is preferred for both active and passive metal post cementation; glass ionomer cement may be used for passive posts in lower-stress applications. Zinc phosphate cement is no longer recommended — its low tensile bond strength makes it inadequate for post-core systems under modern occlusal loading patterns.
  • When to Prefer Fiber Posts — Metal posts are indicated when maximum retention is required (very short root, minimal dentine remaining, very short clinical crown) or when cost constraints preclude fiber post systems. In all other cases, fiber posts are preferred due to their retrievability, modulus-matching properties, and lower catastrophic failure rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a metal post indicated instead of a fiber post for a crown restoration?

Metal posts are indicated when maximum mechanical retention is required and cannot be achieved with a fiber post: very short residual root length (less than 8 mm available post space), minimal coronal dentine remaining for a core, very wide canal diameter disproportionate to available fiber post sizes, or when cost is a primary constraint and the patient accepts the higher root fracture risk. In all other clinical scenarios, fiber posts are preferred due to their retrievability, modulus-matching, and lower catastrophic root fracture rate.

Active threaded versus passive metal posts — what is the clinical difference?

Active threaded screw posts mechanically engage root dentine by cutting threads during insertion, providing very high retention forces (20–40 N pullout resistance). However, this threading action generates internal wedging stress in the root that predisposes to dentinal cracking and root fracture — particularly in thin-walled roots. Passive metal posts (smooth or serrated parallel designs) rely entirely on cement adhesion for retention, generating no wedging stress, but provide approximately 40–60% less retention than active posts of the same diameter.

What is the root fracture risk with threaded titanium screw posts?

Active threaded screw posts carry the highest root fracture risk of all post designs due to the internal wedging force generated when threads engage dentinal walls. Risk factors that amplify this in Egyptian practice include: over-torquing with improvised instruments instead of the correct post key; selecting a post diameter greater than one-third the root width at the narrowest point; and placing active posts in roots with curved anatomy, root resorption, or thin residual walls (less than 1.5 mm). Root fracture from over-torqued active posts is non-repairable and requires extraction.

Are gold-plated dental posts clinically superior to titanium posts?

No — gold plating provides no mechanical or biological advantage over uncoated titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V). The gold coating improves the post's aesthetic appearance when used under translucent all-ceramic crowns (preventing a grey metallic shadow), but the coating thickness (2–5 µm) does not meaningfully affect corrosion resistance, bond strength to cement, or retention characteristics. Titanium posts without gold plating perform identically clinically and are more economical.

Does MedSTA supply titanium and gold-plated dental screw posts across Egypt?

Yes — MedSTA supplies titanium screw posts in packs of 120–240 assorted sizes (from 875 EGP per pack, equivalent to approximately 3–7 EGP per post) and gold-plated dental screw posts (from 975 EGP per pack), all priced in EGP. Cairo and Giza delivery within 1–3 business days; nationwide Egypt within 3–5 business days.
