Dental Photography Mirror

Examination mirrors are used to redirect the clinician’s line of sight during clinical assessment — they are small (size 3–5, 14–24 mm diameter), mounted on a handle, and used with an active examination light. Photography mirrors are larger flat or curved reflectors (30–75 mm wide) positioned in the mouth to capture an entire arch or tooth surface in a single camera frame. Photography mirrors must be front-surface-coated (no ghost image), smooth (no handle casting shadows in the frame), and warmed before use to prevent fogging under camera lighting conditions.

Submerge the mirror briefly in warm (40–45°C) water and dry the edges before insertion — this equilibrates the mirror surface temperature to close to oral temperature, preventing condensation when the mirror contacts warm oral air. Commercial dental mirror anti-fog spray applied to the reflective surface and spread with a dry gauze extends the fog-free window by 30–60 seconds. For extended multi-image sessions, use a dental breath-warmed mirror holder or brief rewarming between shots. Cold, dry Egyptian winter clinic environments (when ambient temperature is low and central heating is off) cause faster fogging than summer conditions.

Rinse under running water to remove visible saliva, then autoclave (Class B, 134°C) in an open or perforated tray. Stainless steel photography mirrors withstand repeated autoclave cycles; rhodium-coated mirrors (MASA) may show gradual coating degradation after 100+ cycles — when the surface image quality degrades visibly (reduced reflectivity, dull spots), replace the mirror. Never use abrasive cloths or cleaning agents that scratch the reflective surface; even fine scratches cause image distortion in photographs and degrade the documentation quality.

The standard orthodontic documentation series in Egyptian dental faculty and specialist practice typically includes 7 images: (1) frontal with retractors, centric occlusion; (2) right lateral with retractors; (3) left lateral with retractors; (4) frontal open bite with retractors; (5) upper arch occlusal (using occlusal mirror); (6) lower arch occlusal (using occlusal mirror); (7) smile portrait. An expanded 14-image series adds buccal corridor images and individual anterior tooth detail shots. Photography mirrors are required for images 5–6 (occlusal views).
