How to Choose the Right Dental Impression Materials for Your Practice

  • Alginate (irreversible hydrocolloid) — Alginate is the standard for preliminary and orthodontic impressions. Calcium sulphate dihydrate reacts with sodium alginate at a 1:1 water-to-powder ratio (by volume), producing a gel with a working time of 45–60 seconds and setting time of 2–4 minutes. Dust-free formulations (e.g. Zetalgin) use silica-coated particles to reduce inhalation risk.
  • Fast-set vs regular-set alginate — Regular-set alginate offers a working time of 45–60 seconds at 23°C, allowing adequate tray seating. Fast-set formulations reduce setting time to 30–45 seconds — useful for paediatric patients or high-gag-reflex cases but requires rapid tray placement. In Egypt's summer (30–45°C ambient), water temperature controls setting time — cooler water (16–18°C) extends working time.
