Small butane gas torches (1,500-2,000 degrees C flame) are suitable for minor solder joints in wire clasp assembly, wax spatula heating, and flasking boil-out procedures. Base metal cobalt-chromium alloys used in Egyptian RPD framework construction require solder flow temperatures of 800-1,100 degrees C, which is achievable at the innermost (hottest) part of the butane flame cone. For large-diameter connector soldering requiring sustained high-temperature application, an oxy-gas or oxy-propane torch system is more appropriate than a portable butane torch for Egyptian dental laboratories with high RPD production volumes.

Dental wax instruments should be briefly flamed after each use to burn off adhered wax, then wiped with a dry lint-free cloth before placement in the instrument holder. Never wipe a hot wax instrument with alcohol-soaked gauze as this deposits microscopic carbon residue on the metal surface, which transfers to subsequent wax patterns and creates surface irregularities visible after ceramic firing. AISI 316L steel instruments can be autoclaved at 134 degrees C after macroscopic wax removal; autoclave-sterilising instruments with residual wax contaminates the autoclave chamber. Store instruments in closed cassette holders to prevent surface oxidation in Egyptian lab environments.

Dental lab gas torches use either a Bunsen valve (cylindrical, push-fill nozzle) or a Colibri valve (cylindrical, side-fill nozzle) for refilling. Identify your torch nozzle type from the manufacturer's specification before purchasing butane refill canisters from MedSTA. Egyptian-manufactured butane canisters available in hardware stores predominantly use Colibri (side-fill) fittings; imported dental lab torch brands may require specific Bunsen-valve canisters. Fill the torch in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources, invert the canister over the nozzle, and test the torch outdoors before returning to the laboratory environment.
