• PMMA vs Ceramic Blocks — PMMA blocks are lighter, more fracture-resistant and cheaper to mill than ceramic; ceramic offers superior aesthetics and wear resistance. PMMA is the preferred choice for long-term temporaries, full-arch provisionals and implant-supported restorations where fracture resistance is critical.
• Advantages of PMMA over Conventional Temporaries — Pre-polymerised PMMA has far less residual monomer than chair-mix bis-acryl temporaries, reducing tissue irritation. CAD/CAM PMMA temporaries also have consistent physical properties without the voids and porosity common in hand-mixed temporary materials.
• Multilayer vs Monolithic Blocks — Multilayer PMMA blocks simulate natural dentine-enamel gradients for aesthetic multi-unit cases. Monolithic single-shade blocks suit single-unit posterior provisionals where aesthetics are secondary to function.
• Block Dimensions and Milling Machine Compatibility — Common block sizes are 14 mm and 18 mm height in A and B series (98 mm diameter discs or 40 x 18 mm bars). Always confirm block dimensions are compatible with your specific milling unit before ordering -- not all holders fit all machines.
• Shade Range — PMMA blocks follow the Vita Classic shade system (A1-D4) plus special gingival and bleach shades. For full-arch provisionals, multilayer A2/A3 blocks reproduce natural depth and translucency most closely for most Egyptian patient populations.
• Post-Milling Polishing — PMMA blocks accept a high-gloss polish with standard composite polishing burs and silicone points. Polish in sequence from coarse to ultra-fine; final gloss with a high-shine composite paste gives a surface comparable to glazed ceramic.

2. Choose monolithic blocks for single-unit posterior provisionals; multilayer for aesthetic multi-unit cases.
3. Select the Vita shade closest to the natural teeth or the desired final ceramic shade.
4. Verify the block series (A or B) matches your milling machine holder type.
5. Polish milled restorations with composite polishing system from coarse through ultra-fine for optimal surface finish.
