How to Choose Carbide Burs

• Shank Type -- FG vs RA vs HP — FG (friction grip) burs fit high-speed turbines; RA (right angle) and HP fit slow-speed handpieces. Select shank type based on the handpiece -- mixing FG and RA shanks damages both bur and chuck.
• Round Burs — Round carbide burs open carious lesions and create retention grooves in cavity prep. Available in sizes 1/4 through 8; size 2 is the most common for initial caries removal.
• Fissure Burs — Tapered and straight fissure burs create box forms and extend cavity outlines. Cross-cut fissure burs cut faster with less chatter; plain cut gives smoother walls for adhesive preps.
• Finishing Burs — Multi-fluted finishing burs smooth composite and metal restorations without scratching. Twelve-flute and thirty-flute carbide finishers produce different surface textures -- more flutes means smoother.
• Endo Access Burs — Endo access burs open the pulp chamber roof safely without overextending. Safe-end (non-cutting tip) carbide burs prevent iatrogenic perforation during access cavity preparation.
• Number of Uses — Carbide burs blunt over repeated use -- replace when cutting efficiency drops noticeably. Single-patient use is recommended for infection control; multi-use requires autoclave between patients.

1. Identify the procedure -- cavity prep, crown reduction, finishing, or endo access.
2. Match shank type (FG/RA/HP) to the handpiece in use.
3. Choose bur shape based on the cavity form required -- round, fissure, or inverted cone.
4. Select grit or flute count for the desired surface finish.
5. Follow single-patient use or sterilise per manufacturer guidance before reuse.
