Nova Compo C LC composite

Imicryl Nova Compo C is a light-curing, radiopaque, nano-hybrid composite for anterior and posterior restorations, built around Imicryl's proprietary ULS® (Ultra Low Shrinkage) monomer technology.

Composition

The monomer matrix is composed of different dimethacrylates (18-22% weight) and ULS® (Ultra Low Shrinkage) monomer. The fillers contain barium glasses, ytterbium and prepolymer (83-78% weight), additives, catalysts, stabilizers and pigments.

Monomer Technology

Compo C is designed with high molecular weight reduced-shrinkage resins. The higher molecular weight of the resin results in less shrinkage, reduced aging and a slightly softer flexible resin matrix, with greater hydrophobicity and lower water absorption. Nova Compo C contains a very small amount of diluent monomers like TEGDMA, keeping the modulus of elasticity optimized rather than overly stiff and brittle, so the material can better buffer high stress at the restoration margin.

Filler Technology

Nova Compo C uses different types, sizes and concentrations of fillers to balance translucency, strength and radiopacity: high-density radiopaque prepolymerized filler, 0.7 micron ba-glass, 0.4 micron ba-glass, and nano fillers. Prepolymerized fillers give low shrinkage, low stress, non-sticky, easy handling and shaping, with high loading providing better wear resistance than traditional less-loaded prepolymerized filler composites. The nano fillers and 0.4 micron ba-glasses fill the space between prepolymerized particles, giving high polish, wear resistance, surface hardness and a smooth finish.

Compo C offers sufficient working time before setting under the operatory light. The refractive index of filler and matrix are optimized for the chameleon effect, using fillers with optical properties chosen to scatter and transmit light similarly to natural tooth structure.

ULS® Monomer

ULS® monomer has a high molecular weight, low C=C double bond content and high flexibility, reducing polymerization shrinkage and shrinkage stress. It also has a higher degree of conversion than traditional UDMA/Bis-GMA monomers, reducing residual monomer release and increasing biocompatibility. Its high percent elongation and toughness improve restoration durability by allowing the composite to tolerate stress through some stretching and elongation at the composite-tooth interface.

Evaluation of ULS® Monomer as an Additive

ULS® monomer was added at 10 wt% and 25 wt% to a 70:30 wt% blend of BisGMA and TEGDMA, using a camphorquinone (CQ, 0.3 wt%) and ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate (EDAB, 0.8 wt%) photoinitiator system. Specimens were prepared per ISO 4049 at 25x2x2mm and tested on a universal testing machine (DEVOTRANS, Istanbul, Turkey) at 1mm/min.

Degree of Conversion

The average degree of conversion for the ULS® monomer was 32% higher than an identical BisGMA/TEGDMA (70/30) blend under the same photoinitiator package and curing protocol (470nm visible light, 20-second exposure at 2mm tip-to-resin distance), measured via infrared spectrum comparison before and after cure.

Comparison with UDMA and Bis-GMA

With around 25% ULS® monomer added, shrinkage and shrinkage stress decrease and degree of polymerization increases, while mechanical properties and elastic modulus remain intact. The monomer's high percent elongation and toughness let the composite tolerate stress at the composite-tooth interface through stretching and elongation, supporting long-lasting restorations.
