Inter-proximal reduction (IPR, also called slenderizing or stripping) is the controlled removal of interproximal enamel (0.1–0.5 mm per surface, maximum 0.8 mm total reduction per contact) to resolve crowding or discrepancy between tooth size and arch length. Rinse thoroughly with water and apply fluoride varnish after completing IPR to remineralise the freshly cut enamel surface. Contra-angle strip IPR is faster and more controlled than hand strip IPR for posterior contact reductions in molar-premolar areas.
