Female genital reshaping surgery is one of the most indemand aesthetic procedures nowadays. The complex of
these procedures is frequently named Aesthetic or Cosmetic
Gynecology, and the surgeons performing these procedures,
mainly gynecologists, call themselves aesthetic or cosmetic
gynecologists.
The background demand arises with the women’s desire to
improve the appearance of that particular and sensitive part of
their body. A few decades ago, it was almost impossible to
consider even opening such a discussion among medical
professionals; however, as with everything else, evolution
comes from a need, and genital reshaping can be a real need
due to malformation of the shape, length, or width of tissues.
On the other hand, it can also be a luxury need to allow a
better appearance in the eye of the patient herself. Whatever
the motivations behind female genital reshaping surgery,
there is one fact that we cannot ignore, which is the impact of
these procedures on a woman’s self-esteem, confidence, and
general psychological status.
The examination of the shape of the genitalia seems to
be an ancient habit, and people have admired their bodies
for as long as we know; even those of the Stone Age
reflected this in their art. The body shape has long been
reflected in art, including the genitalia. Visiting any Greek
archaeological museum will allow the visitor to
immediately realise how perfectly symmetrical the
statues of bodies are, including the shape of the genitalia.
You will never see or notice asymmetrical labia or a
hypertrophic clitoris, or a bulgy and wrinkled clitoral hood
skin; the female genitalia was perfectly shaped. Observing
the genitalia is also our daily habit. It became more popular
with the revolution of intimate area shaving. People started
realizing what they had there and started to have an
opinion on how this might look, based on their personal
views. The liberation of sexual discussions in the Western
world, especially in the media, is one of the factors behind
this evolution. The liberation of sexual behaviour between
couples is also an essential factor.
The above factors motivated many healthcare
professionals, especially gynecologists, to explore the
topic. Plastic surgeons played an essential role in
introducing the topic to the audience since they were the
first specialists to discuss and perform some procedures to
reshape the external female genitalia. Today, excluding
this service from a gynecology practise seems almost
impossible; patients’ awareness is very high, and they
know what is needed or what they wish to have. Since the
topic is in high demand, special attention should be given
to the psychological relationship with genital reshaping –
from the psychological background in how patients might
perceive the shape of the genitalia to what would be the
impact of having a procedure performed there.
This book shares some important and impressive historical
background related to female genitalia reshaping. The book
mainly focuses on specific field techniques and finally
includes the psychological aspects.
