How to Choose and Use Cold Cure Acrylic Resin

• Cold Cure vs Heat Cure — Cold cure acrylic sets at room temperature in 10-20 minutes; heat cure requires a water bath at 74 deg C for 8 hours. Cold cure is faster and suitable for repairs and temporaries; heat cure gives superior physical properties for definitive denture bases.
• Powder to Liquid Ratio — The standard mix ratio is 3:1 (powder to liquid) by volume for denture base acrylic. Deviating from the ratio causes increased porosity (too wet) or incomplete polymerisation (too dry) -- always measure accurately.
• Working Stages — Cold cure acrylic passes through sandy, stringy, dough and elastic stages before setting -- pack at the dough stage. The dough stage (3-5 minutes at room temperature) is when the material is non-sticky and can be moulded without distortion.
• Shade Selection — Standard shades are A1, A2, A3 and A4 following the Vita scale; gingival pink is the most common denture shade. Check the shade code on existing denture teeth before ordering repair acrylic to ensure a colour match.
• Pressure Curing — Polymerising cold cure acrylic under pressure (50 kPa) in a pressure pot reduces porosity significantly. Water-bath pressure curing at 50 deg C for 15 minutes gives dense acrylic with minimal residual monomer compared to bench-top curing.
• Surface Finishing — Polish cured cold cure acrylic with pumice and then high-shine polish to match the original denture surface. Excessive heat from dry polishing causes surface softening -- use wet polishing wheels and keep the rpm below 3,000.

How to Select Cold Cure Acrylic Resin

1. Identify the application -- denture repair, temporary crown, custom tray or retainer.
2. Select gingival pink shade for denture repairs; tooth shade (A1-A4) for temporaries.
3. Measure powder and liquid at 3:1 ratio by volume and mix in a non-absorbent vessel.
4. Wait for the dough stage before packing -- material should not stick to gloved fingers.
5. Cure under pressure if available; otherwise bench-cure and polish thoroughly after setting.
