Surgical skills are developed from the very inception of medical careers. Surgery is learnt through observation, assistance,
practicing on model or mannequin and by consulting books, literature, illustration and videos. Obstetrics involves not only
operative surgery but it also consists of various maneuvers and procedures, unique to the specialty. Obstetrics differs from
the other streams of medicine as in most of the situations, operation is done on emergency basis in order to save life of baby,
mother or for both.
Learners learn how to do surgery in most of the cases. More important is, what to do, and when to do, to learn what is the
future effect of surgery, and what is to be done to prevent the complications and adverse sequelae as a result of surgery. With
increase in rate of cesarean delivery this has become very relevant. Injury of birth canal and anal sphincters during vaginal
birth is quite common, however, the magnitude of the problem is often underestimated.
During last few decades, there has been a sea change in obstetric practice due to evolution of various new technologies
and availability of guideline-based and evidence-based medicine.
There is no dearth of learning materials today, however dearth is in the availability of a good compendium to get
everything under a single umbrella in very precise manner including the titbits of surgical methods and the tricks of obstetric
procedures.
Keeping this in mind, a great challenge has been taken by me to make such a manual which is led by my vast teaching
and clinical experience and extensive dealing with the numerous obstetrics patients of versatile nature for over three and
half decades. During my early days of my professional career and thereafter, I have been associated with several stalwarts and
many colleagues who are great obstetricians in true sense, which has helped me to take up this herculean task.
Starting from the basic surgical principle and development of skill, tackling of the obstetric patients extending from early
pregnancy to intrapartum and postpartum periods, every aspect has been described with huge number of illustrations, both
original and diagrams with special emphasis on procedures and operative steps.
Hope this unique book of operative obstetrics will be thoroughly useful, which will help to update the knowledge and skill
of the postgraduates and practitioners in obstetrics and be a companion in day-to-day practice.
